Community Engagement

FRWC is committed to engaging the communities within our watershed to ensure our programs support your needs. Residents, business owners, and students are often the first to notice environmental changes or problems, and are vital to the work we do. Here are multiple ways FRWC engages with communities across our watershed:

FRWC Chapters - With a small staff and huge watershed, we can’t be everywhere at once. That’s where our local chapters step in - they have deep connections with their local communities (geographic or interest) and can increase our impact across the watershed.

  • Fli River Anglers promotes the water hidden in plain sight to improve angler access to local rivers, increase access to angling for underserved youth, and partner to further conservation and recreation goals.

  • Friends of the Flint River Trail is a bicycle group founded to promote and publicize the safe use of the trail system and to maintain the trail by hosting group rides and clean-ups. They also advocate and partner for trail expansion and improvements.

  • The Lapeer Chapter works to engage Lapeer County residents with the river by developing river access, hosting paddles, cleanups, educational events, and more.

Our Water Services - FRWC partners with the Genesee County Drain Commissioner’s office to provide service learning opportunities for local residents and youth, including storm drain stenciling and handing out educational materials in neighborhoods across the county.

Speaking engagements - FRWC offers educational programming and presentations to many audiences throughout the year on the history, science, and future of the Flint River and its watershed.

Watershed management plans - FRWC has worked with many partners and local communities to develop locally-driven watershed management plans that outline the current status and future goals of the local waterway. These plans provide a detailed roadmap to maximize the health and utility of the waterway for people, wildlife, and the environment. Learn more on our Watershed Management Resources page.
